Actor Tom Cruise confirmed Wednesday that there would be a sequel to Top Gun, the worldwide success that put his career into orbit in 1986.
Rumors have been raging for years on whether there would be a Top Gun 2, and – while in Australia to promote his newest movie, The Mummy – Tom Cruise confirmed the rumors during a morning show on Channel Seven.
“Yes, it’s true,” he said when asked if a sequel to Top Gun was in the works. “I’ll probably start shooting next year,” he added. “It’s going to happen, that’s for sure.”
Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of Top Gun, had fueled speculation by posting a photo of Tom Cruise in January 2016 in a tweet that said, “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2“.

Top Gun, also starring Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins, was a hit at the box office – earning nearly $345 million worldwide, including $176 million in North America.
Tom Cruise played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a fiery US Navy pilot who competes with another pilot, Tom “Iceman” Kazanski (Val Kilmer) to attend the prestigious Top Gun flying school.
