Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Uma Thurman and Penelope Cruz are among the actresses being portrayed naturally, with very little enhancement, in the Pirelli 2017 calendar.
The images were taken by German photographer Pete Lindbergh – often cited as the creator of the “super model”.
The actresses were photographed in black and white, with little makeup, a style for which Lindbergh is known.
In a Paris press conference, Lindbergh described the goal of this year’s photoshoot is to capture the sensitivity and emotion while baring the soul of women in the pictures.
As an artist, he expressed a feeling of responsibility to liberate women from the idea of eternal youth and perfection; an ideal set by society that is impossible to achieve.
Lindbergh has worked on three calendars Pirelli, and has photographed celebrities that include Kate Winslet, Jessica Chastain, Robin Wright, Rooney Mara, Zhang Ziyi, Penelope Cruz, Charlotte Rampling, and Alicia Vikander.
Celebrity models for the 2016 Pirelli calendar, primarily photographed by Annie Leibovitz, was praised for its diversity and featured Serena Williams, Amy Schumer and Yoko Ono.
The Pirelli Calendar is an annual trade calendar that began in 1963 and published by the Pirelli company’s UK subsidiary.
The calendar has limited availability as it is primarily distributed as corporate gifts to a limited number of Pirelli customers and celebrities.
Publication was discontinued after the 1974 issue was released due to world recession, primarily driven by the world oil shortage. It was brought back 10 years later and published annually since.
