U.S. computer and electronics manufacturer Apple has reached an agreement that will allow it to sell its iPad tablet to customers of the first Japanese mobile operator, NTT Docomo, according to reports from both companies.
The iPad Air, the latest version of the tablet, and the smaller iPad mini will be available in the network of NTT Docomo beginning June 10, with preorders possibly beginning on June 2.
The iPad was previously only available in Japan from two smaller operators, Softbank and KDDI.
NTT DoCoMo had 63.1 million Japanese customers according to stats from this March.
The company name DoCoMo is derived from the abbreviation of the phrase, “do communications over the mobile network” and also from a compound word dokomo, meaning “everywhere” in Japanese.
