Rhinoplasty Cosmetic Surgeries Drop 34% in Last Decade

In 2009, rhinoplasty accounted for nearly 10% of the total cosmetic surgical procedures performed, according to a study conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. However, over a nine year period, rates of rhinoplasty procedures performed have decreased by 34%. One possible reason for the decline may be the level of experience and expertise required to perform the procedure. Specializing in rhinoplasty in Kansas City, Dr. J. David Kriet and Dr. Clinton D. Humphrey of KU Facial Plastic Surgery recently discussed the extremely difficult procedure.

Dr. Kriet and Dr. Humphrey say they perform the highest volume of rhinoplasty procedures at their Kansas City plastic surgery practice. The doctors say the nose’s delicate framework makes it difficult to manipulate considering the fact that they must produce immediate, yet enduring results. While performed on an outpatient basis, Dr. Kriet and Dr. Humphrey say the rhinoplasty procedure requires extreme precision, as the face is the main focus on first impressions, therefore any procedure must also produce natural-looking results that enhance the harmony of their patients’ facial features. Additionally, the doctors say some patients may choose to undergo a combination of procedures, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or eyelid surgery in Kansas City, to further increase aesthetic facial balance.

The functional concerns of the nose also play an important role in the difficulty of the rhinoplasty procedure, which the doctors say may create a need to address previous procedures with revision rhinoplasty in Kansas City. When the initial procedure fails to produce the desired effect, Dr. Kriet and Dr. Humphrey say the revision procedure requires an even greater level of expertise because the original structure of the nose has been changed. In addition, the revision rhinoplasty procedure often takes longer to complete because it typically involves rebuilding the nose with cartilage grafts. However, the doctors say despite the increased length of the procedure, recovery time is similar to that of primary rhinoplasty.

Despite the difficulty of rhinoplasty procedures and the declining overall rates of the cosmetic surgery, Dr. Kriet and Dr. Humphrey say all patients should thoroughly explore their options and expectations for the surgery, whether considering surgical procedures like rhinoplasty, or non-surgical procedures like BOTOX® Cosmetic in Kansas City. The doctors at KU Facial Plastic Surgery say, for patients desiring a greater facial balance or an improvement in the functional role of the nose, rhinoplasty procedures can address both aesthetic and functional issues when performed by a highly-skilled, experienced plastic surgeon- because the first impression often has a lasting effect on a patient’s outlook on life.
